Back in Brisbane after an amazing weekend at Mt Buller. I had planned on doing a quick round-up of Friday yesterday but the internet place on the mountain wasn’t letting me upload. So here’s some stuff from Friday and hopefully I’ll be able to do a quick round up of Saturday’s events tomorrow, before I get started on going through all the photos and writing some more detailed blogs.

That one of Jim White is freaky! He looks like a mad scientist or something. I love it. And Warren Ellis likewise…

You would have loved the weekend, although they did cut Ocean Songs short as D3 ran out of time, which was annoying. Hopefully it’ll be back next year, although with all the positivity coming from everyone who went it’ll probably sell out in about 5 minutes…

How were the Laughing Clowns? I became a big fan after buying the three disc best-of Ed Kuepper put out a couple of years ago

Photos are great. I agree with what Stephen said about Jim White.

Thanks Charlyn. The worst lighting all weekend was for the Dirty Three, and the photos weren’t helped by Warren Ellis generally playing with his back to the crowd, but it did mean that as Jim and Warren were playing off each other that you could get some ok photos of Jim. Jim White also played drums for Bill Callahan (with Mick Turner on guitar) so also got some photos of him in the daylight.

Laughing Clowns were excellent, a real highlight of the weekend. Not that familiar with the songs and the song titles but whatever they played as their last song was jaw-droppingly amazing. Might have to go search out some albums and will probably go and see them when they play at GoMA in Brisbane in a few weeks time

I’ve never seen Warren not play with his back at least half to the crowd. I think it’s just because they take cues off each other. I vividly remember White and Ellis doing it for the ending transition of Sue’s Last Ride at Splendour … just stretching it out all to buggery and making the audience pretty much explode in anticipation. I really like it, because it makes them a tighter outfit, but it certainly makes them much more difficult to shoot.

Justin, I have that three-CD Laughing Clowns best of if you’d like to borrow it at some point. It’s fucking ace. I already have a ticket to the GOMA gig.

These are great Justin … really brilliant. So wonderful to be reminded of what was a truly wonderful weekend of music. Love the sepia shot – caught us in full flight!

    Thanks for posting these pics!

    All the best
