Deadshits 4 – Woods + Hunx & His Punx + Black Realm vs Naked On The Vague + Kitchens Floor @ The Zoo, 25.01.2013

Hunx & His Punx - Deadshits 4 @ The Zoo, Friday 25 January 2013

A very last minute arranged trip to The Zoo for the latest edition of Deadshits. Although I’d photographed Deadshits #1 and Deadshits #2, and taken a bunch of photos that I really like, I didn’t make it to #3.  Looking at a line-up that included Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, Absolute Boys, Angel Eyes, Kitchen’s Floor, Blank Realm, Circular Keys, Primitive Motion, Superstar and Scraps, it’s a bit of a mystery why I didn’t make it.  #3 was spread over three shows over the weekend so it’s surprising that I didn’t go to any of the shows to complete the set.  Checking through my 2012 diary, the simple reason looks like I was already booked up to photograph a couple of other shows, namely Dig It Up! 2012 (Hoodoo Gurus, The Sonics and 5, 6, 7, 8s) on the Friday night and Mark Langegan on the Saturday night and those were the two nights I really wanted to go to rather than the early Sunday evening show in West End.

Although the previous Deadshits have had a strong Australian focus, the tradition is broken tonight with the inclusion of the two US acts at the top of the bill, Wood and Hunx & His Punx.  The main reason I’m keen to re-acquaint myself with the event is to see Hunx & His Punx and the Blank Realm/Naked On The Vague collaboration.  The Blank Realm/Naked On The Vague collaboration is disappointing as it doesn’t add anything and sounds slightly under-rehearsed so it’s up to Hunx & His Punx to make the night, which they do with ease.  Playful, camp, possibly/probably drunk, and a whole lot of fun.  I stick around for a few songs of Woods and it’s slightly surprising to find that he sings in a range somewhere like a cross between John Anderson from Yes and Rush’s Geddy Lee.  They probably should have timetabled it with Hunx playing last as it’s an anti-climax to end the night on.
