Archive for April 2006

Almost didn’t make it for this one due to my neighbour blocking my car in but eventually managed to squeeze out, with only a teeny tiny detour via the back wall…

The Mean Streaks were on ridiculously early, being a Sunday night and all. Luckily it was so early that the lighting guy obviously hadn’t turned up yet so they just had all the lights on. Meant that there was light on the drum riser for once so made a real effort to get a decent photo of T-Bone.

The band were planning on leaving ASAP after they had played but got delayed thanks to lift trouble. Decided to stick around for the rest of the bands but the lighting guy had obviously turned up by this point so the other three bands played in semi-darkness.

So with a combination of darkness, soberness, tiredness and the unpleasant thought of the drive back to Brisbane the rest of the photos weren’t exactly…..um….very good. And let’s leave it at that.

Out of all the dates definitely the night that everyone had been most looking forward to. Jo forgot to put me on the door, so it’s a good job it was SixFtHick and my money was going to a good cause, otherwise it might have been an early night for me…

The Mean Streaks played a good show, not as good as the night before at The Rev, but better than the Byron Show. Although that night evened itself out if you viewed it from the comedy angle…

Eat Laser Scumbag put on another impressive show, following on from the gig at Fat Louie’s the weekend before, and the Vegas Kings followed suite.

But everyone was there to see the Hick, and they were the best seen them in my short life in Brisbane. The usual carnage but on a bigger stage than seen them before. The night ended with Ben swinging from the rafters, Geoff crowd surfing and a large chunk of the audience on the stage.

Day Two: The Mean Streaks Do Brisbane

After the worst night’s sleep ever, largely thanks to drunken backpackers being thrown out the pubs at 3am and getting kebabs at the place across the road from my room, it was up at 7am and to meetings in the Gold Coast. If there was any small consolation it was that didn’t have to share the bed with Mike from The Mean Streaks. Coped with work largely due to McDonald’s sausage and egg mcmuffin meal and coffee, although this had worn out by lunch so was a bit leisurely getting back to the office in Brisbane. Leisurely as in via Ikea to buy bookshelf and a 2 hour lunch sorting out car rego.

But a can of red bull and a kit kat later and was ready to go again. Same bill as in Byron at The Rev in Brisbane.

As had gone for long shots in Byron decided that would use my fave f2.8 70-200 and do close up shots for tonight. And made later decision hat as there had been some ok lighting that would do colour for once. Not sure if these were good choices as have already had death threats from Danica for the photos posted from tonight…

Maybe if have enough time ever might go back and see what they look like in b+w. But I think there’s some cool ones, esp Faker. Was lucky enough to be sat up top on the balcony when they got people up on stage so got some good photos of that.

Day One: The Means Streaks Do Byron

Hit the road last Thursday for a mini tour with The Mean Streaks as part of shooting 17 bands in 5 days. As much as you can do a tour when you only spend one night away from home…

First stop: Byron for the gig at the Great Northern with Faker, Van She and The Valentinos. Decided to have a play with my very little used f2.8 24-70 lens and get some full length portraits.
