Last night it was G3 at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Promoter photography rules get ever worse - turn up at 10:15pm and you can shoot the finale when all three of the guitarists - Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Petrucci - are on stage.
The gig was running late so more like 10:45pm when we get into the auditorium. Tour manager tells that the original plan was to let us shoot the first song of each of the three guitarists but that it was too much hassle for them so instead we’ll have 10 minutes when they’re all on stage… Was more like about 5 minutes before a beefy security guard tells us to move and escorts us to the side of the stage.
However, the tour manager was supposed to escort us from the premises but is nowhere to be seen. So we get to spend the rest of the gig, probably about 40 minutes, watching from the side of the stage. Sweet.
A few photos below and the rest here.

Went to The Globe for the first time on Friday and found that it’s really nice venue, especially the lighting. Even the red light was strong enough to get some really nice contrasty B+W shots.
Had taken Thursday and Friday off ill and have spent ever since coughing up my lungs so probably shouldn’t have gone. Suffering for my art…
Was a fun night though.
Some photos here and dumped the rest here.

The Mean Streaks

Noel Gallagher was in town last Tuesday as part of his whirlwind semi-acoustic tour. The deal was supposed to be three songs and escorted out the venue (although by the time we were escorted to the pit he was already half way through the first song…).
I was packing up afterwards and watching him play ‘Cast No Shadow’, which is one of my favourite Oasis songs, when the woman from Sony came by and started chatting. Was expecting to be chucked out but she said I was more than welcome to stay. Nice people working for Sony shock…
The show did make me feel a bit sad though. Although not a big fan at all – to me, both Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory have a handful of really good songs but are still about 50% filler - it did make me reminisce for days and people gone by. He only played for about an hour so was glad I didn’t pay $70 for it. Photos aren’t anything special. I had a really strong idea of what I wanted to capture but he really hunches over his microphone and so you never get the catchlights in his eyes I wanted to get. Although that might be caused by the eyebrows…

Took some photos a couple weekends ago of Tapes ‘n Tapes. Decided that would get some practice in by only shooting the first three songs. Although I did cheat and do a couple near the end of Tapes ‘n Tapes’ set. The keyboard player started playing a tuba. What else was I to do?
More here.

What I learnt from last Saturday night:
(a) I don’t take very good photos at The Troubadour; and
(b) I don’t take very good photos of Jean Nicotine.
Actually, I already knew both of those things…
A few more here.
