Got another of those last minute requests, this time to cover Robert Forster’s gig at the Brisbane Powerhouse, which I couldn’t say no to. Unfortunately it was a 3 songs and escorted out of the venue job, which was a shame as I always enjoy seeing him play. In addition, it was a bit of a frustrating shoot as we were only allowed to photograph from way out to the side of the stage, the high positioned lighting meant dark shadows under his brow so it was hard to get a shot of his eyes, and he played the first three songs (at least) solo on an acoustic guitar with the rest of his band no where in sight. Not the greatest shots ever. Although the colour of the lighting was fine, as usual, I prefer the monotone shots.

Better Robert Forster photos can be seen in my blogs for The Brisbane Sound and the 4 Ages of Robert Forster residency at the Powerhouse last year.
Photographed Tim Rogers at The Powerhouse last week. Got there at 8:30pm and managed to only just get in time, having already missed The Hampdens, who were supporting.
Have experienced The Powerhouse before and it’s not the best for photographing. Was in the Powerhouse Theatre, which although an impressive room is always very dark. But, as experienced when I photographed Robert Forster there, the rules are that you aren’t allowed to photograph from in front of anyone, meaning you either photograph from ther aisle at the side of the stage or from right at the back of the auditorium, both of which are some way from the centre of the stage.
Did the first 3ish from the side of the stage and then went and sat at the back to enjoy the show, and took a few long range, wide angles shots whilst sat down there. Decided to photograph the encore from the other side of the stage.
Really enjoyed the show but the photos weren’t the best, which is disappointing as I put in for it because I really like photographing Tim Rogers - as a photograper he gives you a lot to work with, and have taken some really nice photos of him with You Am I, at last year’s Falls Festival, and with Tex Perkins, at last year’s Valley Fiesta. Still, always next time, and see that You Am I are playing at The Zoo in mid-November…

Been doing too much photographing and not enough updating stuff recently…
The week after Pig City photographed Robert Forster who was playing a residency at The Powerhouse, doing a different album in full each night for 4 nights with the line-up that recorded each album. Originally put in for final night when he was playing Go-Betweens from 2000-2006 but they weren’t doing photos that night. The only other night that could do was the first night when he was playing ‘Danger in the Past’ with Mick Harvey and Thomas Wydler reprising their roles from the 1990 recording (and Adele Pickvance on bass). Had been looking forward to photographing him but was a frustrating as there was no photo pit, with the seats going right up to the stage. This meant that could only shoot from the aisles at the side, meaning that the photos were a lot more profile than had wanted. This was my favourite from the night and was printed in rave in the first week of August.

A couple of days after had a bit of a change of scene and photographed Young & Restless, with Butcher Birds supporting, at Exile, the new venue on Roma Street. Lighting was ok-ish for Butcher Birds but Y&R played pretty much in the dark. So cheated and used flash. A few photos below and a lot more on flickr.

Went to see The Gin Club play an afternoon show last Sunday at The Powerhouse. They were filming for a DVD and didn’t want to get in the way so took some long-range and wider-than-I’d-normally-do-angle shots. Have wanted to try to get a proper group shot of the band but with the amount of people and gear on stage it’s near impossible. Good thing about The Powerhouse is the different levels so was able to take photos from a much higher level than the band. The building itself is an impressive structure so did a couple of shots trying to incorporate the structure into the photo.

W/e before last was Pauhaus. No quick way in so had to queue up for 35 minutes so whilst got to see second half of Violent Soho’s set missed my 3 songs to photograph them in. Considering how good the lighting rigs are on all three stages at The Powerhouse the lighting wasn’t as good as hoped it would have been. The main stage had a massive wall of backlighting that just seemed to be in your face all the time and the smoke machine behind the drum kit meant drummer photos were difficult. Then the smoke just seemed to drift at head height across the stage to cover the rest of the band….
Also was feeling tired and uninspired so worst photos taken in a long, long time. That’s just how it is sometimes….
Ed Kuepper was the highlight of the day. Had never seen him before. Really, really want a photo pass for Pig City now…. [Edit: And even more so having seen The Apartments last night]. So if anyone knows of anyone wanting some photos done of the day point them in my direction….
